Trans fats, once seen as harmless additives that ended up in everything from Twinkies to French fries, are finally getting the reputation they deserve – bad for health.

For years, the FDA has labelled trans fats as “generally recognized as safe.? That term applies to substances added to foods that experts consider safe, and so can be used without testing or approval. Yesterday the FDA proposed removing trans fats from the generally recognized as a safe list, a step that would eliminate artificial trans fats from the American food supply.

Just in case you had any doubt that the food regulatory agencies of North America are utterly bought and paid for, here’s the proof you need:

While every 10yr old in the country has already figured out that Cheezies are terrible for you, the Canadian health authorities and the FDA, up until today, still believed they are safe.

But hey, never fear. At least the US side is announcing a preliminary finding for their removal from the generally-safe-list – and then opening the floor for input…

To be precise, they are not seeking input on what should be done with anyone who ever again dares ever add a 10yr known lethal-oil-turned-to-a-solid-using-hydrogen-gas product to the food chain, but on how much the mega food corp’s wallets will be disrupted by this and on the glacially slow pace likely to be displayed as companies get around to fixing such an inconvenient problem…
